IWC Schaffhausen (International Watch Co.) was founded in 1868 by American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, chosen for its Rhine hydropower and skilled craftsmen. Jones aimed to combine American industrial production techniques with Swiss finishing, a concept ahead of its time that led to early financial difficulties. In 1880 the company was stabilized under Johann Rauschenbach-Vogel, entering a long period of technical excellence in precision engineering.

IWC developed some of the 20th century's most influential tool watches: the 1936 Special Pilot's Watch, the 1939 Portugieser (built around a large precision pocket watch movement), the 1948 Mark 11 pilot's watch, and the 1950s Ingenieur antimagnetic watch. IWC has been part of the Richemont Group since 2000. For collectors, IWC is prized for its engineering integrity, military pilot watch heritage, and the quality of movements like the in-house Caliber 89 and the long-running Cal. 8541B Pellaton automatic used in the Ingenieur and Aquatimer families.
