Cyma SA was founded in 1862 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by brothers Joseph and Theodore Schwob. A partnership with Frédéric Henri Sandoz from 1892 drove rapid expansion; by 1929 Cyma claimed the largest watch workshop in Europe, with over 2,000 employees assembling more than 4,000 watches per day. Cyma won a gold medal at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and was an early pioneer of waterproof watches (from 1915). The sister brand Tavannes was marketed in parallel.

Both Cyma and Tavannes declined sharply in the 1960s; production ceased by 1966. ASUAG's Chronos Holding acquired both names and restarted production in 1968. Cyma is now owned by Stelux International Ltd of Hong Kong. For collectors, vintage Cyma pocket watches and early wristwatches from the 1920s–1960s represent solid Swiss manufacture production; Tavannes-marked examples of the same calibers are often more affordable.
