Cartier was founded in 1847 in Paris by Louis-François Cartier, who took over his employer's workshop on Rue Montorgueil. Royal and aristocratic patronage followed rapidly — King Edward VII famously called Cartier "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers." Horologically, Cartier's contributions include the Santos (1904) — one of the first purpose-designed men's wristwatches, made for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont — the iconic Tank (1917), and numerous shaped and mystery clock innovations.

Cartier does not manufacture its own ebauches but sources movements from specialist Swiss makers, historically including Frédéric Piguet (as in the Cartier 205/FP 1185 in this database), LeCoultre, and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Finishing is done to Cartier's exacting in-house standards. Since 1988 Cartier has been a cornerstone brand of the Richemont Group. Vintage Cartier watches — particularly Santos, Tank, and Baignoire models — are among the most actively traded pieces in the collector market.
