Zodiac was founded in 1882 in Le Locle, Switzerland by Ariste Calame; the Zodiac trademark was registered in 1901 and the first dedicated factory opened in 1908. The company achieved several notable innovations: in 1948 it introduced the Autographic, claimed to be the first automatic watch with a power-reserve indicator (developed in collaboration with LeCoultre). Zodiac also produced well-regarded chronographs and the Sea Wolf diver series, a robust and affordable tool watch of the 1950s–1970s that has attracted renewed collector interest.

In 1951 a modern factory was inaugurated above the Le Locle railway station. On 1 October 2001, Fossil Inc. acquired the worldwide Zodiac brand rights for approximately $4.7 million. Zodiac continues as a brand within the Fossil Group portfolio, marketed primarily in the United States with a focus on dive watch heritage.
