Rolex SA was founded in 1905 in London by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf and Davis, with the Rolex trademark registered in 1908. Wilsdorf relocated the business to Geneva in 1919 to sidestep punitive post-war import tariffs on precious metals. Two landmark innovations followed in quick succession: the Oyster — the world's first waterproof wristwatch case — in 1926, and the Perpetual self-winding rotor in 1931. Both patents became industry standards and remain cornerstones of Rolex's collector appeal.

Rolex grew into the world's largest luxury watch brand by turnover, known for robust in-house calibers and iconic reference lines including the Submariner, GMT-Master, Daytona, and Datejust. Upon Wilsdorf's death in 1960, ownership passed to the private Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, which still owns Rolex SA today. The company also owns the Tudor brand as a more accessible tier. Rolex calibers — from the hand-wound pocket-watch movements of the early 20th century to the modern 3235 and 4130 series — are extensively documented and widely studied by collectors.
