Angelus was founded in 1891 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by brothers Albert and Gustav Stolz (joined by Charles in 1898), former students of Henri Sandoz of the Tavannes Watch Company. The firm won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair almost immediately after founding and established itself as a specialist in complications and precision work.

Angelus produced the first series wristwatch with a calendar in 1942 and the groundbreaking Tinkler automatic alarm wristwatch in 1958 — a movement of considerable technical complexity. Chronograph calibers are among their most sought-after pieces. Production halted during the quartz crisis. The brand was revived in 2011 by Manufacture La Joux-Perret SA in La Chaux-de-Fonds, now producing entirely in-house mechanical movements. The 120 and 123 series calibers in this database represent the brand's classic complication movements.
