Minerva SA Calibers
Minerva SA is a Swiss watch manufacturer with roots going back to 1858 in Villeret, canton of Bern, when brothers Charles and Hyppolite Robert founded H. & C. Robert. The firm began producing its own movements in 1895 and registered the Minerva trademark in 1887, formally adopting it as the company name in 1929. Minerva became internationally renowned for chronograph calibers: series production of pocket watch chronographs began in 1908, followed by wristwatch chronographs in the mid-20th century. The firm survived the quartz crisis on the strength of its mechanical chronograph excellence.
In 2000 the founding Frey family sold the company; in 2006 the luxury group Richemont acquired Fabrique d'Horlogerie Minerva SA. In 2007 Montblanc integrated the Villeret manufacture as the Institut Minerva de Recherche en Haute Horlogerie. In 2026 Minerva re-emerged as a distinct standalone brand, with its name appearing unaccompanied on dials for the first time since the Richemont acquisition. Minerva chronograph calibers — particularly lever-escapement pocket watch movements and early wristwatch column-wheel designs — are prized by serious collectors.
