LIP Calibers
LIP is France's most iconic watch manufacturer, founded in 1867 by Emmanuel Lipmann in Besançon, Franche-Comté, initially as Comptoir Lipmann. The LIP name was registered in 1908. By the mid-1930s, LIP was producing 40,000 watches per year as France's largest watch manufacturer, and by 1958, 1,500 employees turned out 500,000 watches annually. The firm supplied the legendary rectangular T18 model (launched 1933) to celebrities and governments — a gold T18 was France's state gift to Winston Churchill in 1948.
LIP became embroiled in the celebrated Lip Affair of 1973–1976, a landmark French labor dispute in which workers occupied the factory and self-managed production — a defining moment in 20th-century labor history. The firm was definitively liquidated in 1977. The brand was revived in 2014 under the Société des Montres Bisontines and today manufactures watches in Besançon. LIP calibers are of strong collector interest for their French horological heritage and the historical significance of the brand.
