Citizen Calibers

Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. was founded in 1918 in Tokyo as the Shokosha Watch Research Institute by Kamekichi Yamazaki. The first Citizen-branded pocket watch appeared in 1924 — the name suggested by Tokyo mayor Count Shinpei Goto to reflect the ambition of quality timepieces for all citizens. Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. was formally incorporated in 1930, with men's wristwatches following in 1931.

Citizen grew into one of the world's largest watch manufacturers, pioneering anti-magnetic and water-resistant designs and, most consequentially, Eco-Drive light-powered movements from 1976. The company produces movements across the full range from high-volume quartz to fine mechanical calibers, and operates the Miyota ebauche division — a major supplier to the broader watch industry. Collectors value Citizen for its technically sophisticated multi-complication quartz movements, its historical mechanical calibers, and the premium The Citizen series with observatory-certified accuracy.
